If you hadn't already heard, Sodium wins the Vegas Invitational College Showcase!
The lady warriors represented Oregon in style as they walked away with the hardware in Vegas! Beautiful weather awaited Sodium as they took the field at the Bettye Wilson soccer complex.
For game recaps, see below;
There were so many goals this weekend that I am just going to list the specifics.
Game 1 - Sodium 2 vs 2 Heat FC 96 ECNL (NV)
The ladies showed real poise as they came from a 2-0 deficit. Mac Kearney drills the first of the comeback followed by Dani Brown's goal in the second half. Sodium had huge pushes late in both halves. They never gave up, never backed down, never lost faith.
Game 2 - Sodium 2 vs 0 Placer United Elite (CAN)
In a very workman like fashion Sodium took the field and methodically played their game. Control of the ball and tempo was the game plan. Payton Sonnen found a streaking Dani Brown to open things up. Just before half center defender Taylor Coon lead Dani Brown into the 18 yard box and she proceeded to find the net for what would prove the winner.
Game 3 - Sodium 5 vs 3 Boise Nationals BNSC Premier (ID)
In what would prove to be the worst officiated game we have seen in years, the lady warriors held on for victory. Numerous yellow cards for both teams. Phantom calls, no explanations and a center ref totally full of himself proved to be almost a comedy show, not a College Showcase match. Both teams left shaking their heads. Elly Williamson started off the contest when she took the cross from Aliyah Chance and headed a beautiful goal. Sodium and Boise would trade goals by Dani Brown and Jadyn McMillan. Jadyn McMillan hit on another patented penalty kick to give Sodium a 4-3 lead and Elly Williamson took the cross and ripped the net for the 5th and final. Sighs of relief came along with the final whistle.
Game 4 - Sodium 5 vs 0 Gilbert Arsenal 96 Premier (AZ)
Serenaded by the trophy tent DJ the lady warriors rocked the team from Arizona. Aliyah Chance fed a pretty lead pass to Dani Brown to start the flood. McKayla Creamer took matters into her own hands as she bullied her way deep down the left side, cut back and then bent a beautiful ball into the upper corner of the far post. The crowd went nuts for the outstanding shot. After the break Laura Camp lofted a corner kick to Juliana Hairston at the back post to deflect into the net. Minutes later there was scuffle in front of the net and a battling Emmy Owens ripped the ball into the net for a 4 goal advantage. As some of the players delighted the fans with their rendition of the Village Peoples Y-M-C-A, Jadyn McMillan punched in a 22 yard free kick to end the match 5-0 and give Sodium the hardware for first place.
From the sidelines
Kudos to Mel Langley on her coaching debut. Mel is Sodium's new assistant and comes to us from Portland State University and Oregon ODP. She did a fantastic job with the ladies who have grown to admire and respect her. (And the parents too!)
The Heat FC team was outstanding. Their overall team speed was incredible. They pushed/attacked from every position and were unbelievably disciplined in their passing creating opportunities. Hats off to them, they were by far the best we faced.
